Important Update on the Innovation Hub

The North Little Rock Public Library System (NLRPLS) is announcing a significant operational change regarding the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub. After a unanimous vote by the Library Board on November 17, 2025, the Hub’s lease will not be renewed in 2026.

The Hub will continue operating as a part of NLRPLS through the end of 2025, providing programs and services to the community. This ensures residents can continue to access the Hub’s resources, classes, and maker programs for the remainder of the year.

Financial Review and Operational Realities

A full review of the Hub’s first year under NLRPLS highlighted some operational costs and financial realities that were higher than initially anticipated. Several of the Hub’s core services rely heavily on grant support, and the shifting grant landscape created additional challenges.

Despite the dedication of Hub staff and strong community engagement, continuing operations at this scale is not financially sustainable.

Board Perspective

Library Board Chair Sonny Rhodes emphasized the Board’s responsibility to the community:

“Our fiduciary duty requires us to protect the long-term financial health of the North Little Rock Public Library System. After reviewing the full picture, we determined that continuing to operate the Innovation Hub at its current cost level would jeopardize the stability of the entire system. This was not an easy decision, but it was the responsible one.”

CEO Statement

NLRPLS CEO and Chief Librarian Crystal Gates shared her perspective:

“The Hub has always represented creativity, learning, and opportunity. This transition does not change our belief in that mission. Programs like Skills to Launch will continue beyond 2025, and we remain committed to supporting staff and offering innovative learning experiences for the community.”

Looking Ahead

While we don’t have all the answers at this time, NLRPLS is committed to providing updates as the transition progresses. The Library remains focused on delivering strong services across all locations, providing access, learning, and innovation for the North Little Rock community.
