Job title: Community Educator (Teen Department)
Description This employee provides direct assistance to patrons. Basic duties include checking materials in and out, shelving, shelf reading, and providing excellent customer service to library patrons.
Essential Functions: This classification works closely with colleagues to develop good staff relations, possesses enthusiasm and passion for libraries and offers excellent customer service. This employee communicates with colleagues, management and the public with courtesy and maintains a professional, approachable manner. This employee will work directly with patrons ages 12-18 and assist the daily operations of Laman Library's teen department.

Engaging and assisting students ages 12-18

Possess a working knowledge of library automation systems

Take responsibility for becoming familiar with upgrades to systems

Assume a proactive role within the department

Perform opening/closing procedures correctly

Assist patrons in a courteous fashion

Oversee appropriate use of library facilities and materials

Deal with patron complaints/suggestions patiently and decisively

Assist patrons in using library resources and provide reader’s advisory services

Process overdues, reserves, and periodicals as needed

Assist in reservation of meeting rooms

Assure accurate library shelving of materials according to library policies and procedures

Review materials for damage; clean and repair library materials as needed

Participate in weeding procedure as assigned

Plan and assist with library services and projects, events, and programs intended for a teenaged audience

Prepare materials to publicize library events, programs, resources as needed

Perform other duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification
Abilities, Skills, and Knowledge

Understanding and ability to meet the unique developmental needs of patrons ages 12-18

Open mindset, ability to adapt quickly to new information, and initiative to learn new skills to better serve teenage patrons.
