January’s Reading Around the World Challenge – Countries That Start with “A”

Kick off the year with the North Little Rock Public Library System’s Reading Around the World Challenge! For January, we’re focusing on countries that start with “A.” It’s your chance to explore diverse cultures and voices by reading books or watching movies by authors from, set in, or about countries that begin with the letter "A." 

Some of the countries that start with "A" include Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, and Austria. Whether you're looking to dive into historical fiction, explore rich folktales, or experience contemporary works, these countries offer a wide variety of literary landscapes to explore. 

To get you started, here are some recommended reads for January’s challenge: 

1. Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez 

Set in Argentina, this haunting novel blends family drama with supernatural horror. It’s an unforgettable exploration of grief, love, and generational trauma. Perfect for fans of dark and atmospheric stories. 

2. Folktales for Fearless Girls by Myriam Sayalero 

This inspiring collection of folktales features brave heroines from around the globe, including a captivating story from Armenia. These tales celebrate courage, cleverness, and resilience, making it a perfect read for all ages. 

3. The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline

4. Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enriquez

5. That Hair by Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida 

Set in Angola, this lyrical novel follows the life of a young woman grappling with questions of identity and belonging. It’s a thoughtful and beautifully written exploration of family and heritage. 

How to Participate 

  • Read a book or watch a movie by an author from, set in, or about a country that starts with “A.” 

  • Submit your entry at either library location or online here for a chance to win a gift card to a local restaurant. 

  • All entries also go into the grand prize drawing for a Kindle Paperwhite e-reader at the end of the year!
