Slowing the Summer Slide with Club Laman
Summer at the North Little Rock Public Library System is a time full of fun, fresh experiences, exciting reading challenges, and meaningful learning opportunities. It’s also when we focus on helping students prevent summer learning loss, often referred to as the Summer Slide.
The Summer Slide is the loss of academic progress that can occur during the summer months when schools are out of session. Studies show that students can lose up to two months of reading proficiency over the summer—adding up to 2.5 to 3 years of learning loss by 5th grade! Encouraging reading for pleasure, offering creative problem-solving experiences, and supporting peer socialization are all proven ways to keep young minds active.
Our Club Laman summer learning program is designed to do just that! This once-weekly, hands-on program reinforces age-appropriate skills through storytelling, exploration, guided play, and more. Whether your child joins Camp Kindergarten (ages 4–5), Reading Camp (ages 6–8), or Tween Society (ages 9–12), they’ll enjoy a fun, enriching environment led by our skilled library staff.
To ensure a high-quality experience, class sizes are kept small—so registration is required. Each session meets Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. at Laman Library.
Session 1: June 5 – July 3 (no class June 19 for Juneteenth)
Register here for Session 1
Session 2: July 10 – July 31
Register here for Session 2
Please register for only one session to allow more families to participate. A small snack will be provided, and children are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle. For questions, contact Jill at jwheeler@nlrlibrary.org.
The North Little Rock Public Library System offers a wide range of free summer activities for kids and families. From engaging storytimes to interactive library programs, there’s something for every age. Visit our online calendar to discover more.
